We get used to things so we avoid blood, scars, a heart attack. We get used so we can protect our lives.

We get used to living in the basement of a big house and not having a view because when you look through the windows you can barely see the sidewalk. And because there’s no good view, you just usually leave the drapes closed. And because the drapes are closed, you turn on the lights very soon in the evening. You forget the sun.. you forget the air… you forget nature…
We get used in getting up early but still very late to go to work. We eat our breakfast on the go. We get used to reading the news on the subway because we make that time useful. We get used to eating a sandwich for lunch because it’s something fast to make and even faster to eat. We get used to sleep in the bus because we’re tired. We’re used to sleep early and forget we lost one more day we should have lived.
We get used to waiting for a text message and when we finally get it we read the words: “I’m sorry, I don’t think I can make it today”. We get used to keep trying. We get used to being ignored when we most need to be seen.
We’re used to pay for everything. Everything we need, everything we desire, we pay. And we are used to work harder to get more money to pay for more things. We’re used to knowing that each passing year we will pay more and more for something. After all, there’s always the annual inflation rate. Something we are used to. We’re even used to stay in long lines so we can actually pay for things.
We’re used to go on the streets and see advertisement on the bus stop, on the benches, on the buildings. We’re used to opening the magazines and see advertisement. We’re used to skip the marketing videos on Youtube. We’re used to getting provoked, persuaded, directed. Managed.
We’re used to so many things so we don’t suffer at the end. Little by little we get used to things… things we don’t even notice! We forget some pain, we forget that betrayal, we don’t even remember the big break up. If there’s a global pandemic, we go outside, no problems! Until we’re forced by the government to stay home. Then we get used to staying at home.
We are used to working all day long and hope for the weekend to come very soon. We are used to living waiting for the weekend. The weekend come, we’re used to staying at home getting some rest. We get used to all of things introduced in our lives so we can avoid pain. We get used to things so we avoid blood, scars, a heart attack. We get used so we can protect our lives. A life that little by little get worn out. Worn out of getting used to so many things.
