Today I want to talk about thinking about not thinking and not thinking.
There are moments we are not thinking. Have you ever noticed? Have you ever noticed that in some moments we are not thinking about anything at all? I’m not saying that this is better than actually thinking. I’m just saying that it exists. We’re always judging things, saying they are good or evil, healthy or unhealthy. However this duality mindset can ham us. If you’re like “OMG I cannot think about this, no, don’t, don’t think about this!” or thinking too much like “okay… so this happened because he doesn’t like me, why doesn’t he like me? what did I do? do I need to change my hair?” and so on….
You have to find the balance. There are moments to think and reflect upon life. There are moments to be quiet. It’s practice. Practicing to have a quiet mind. I cannot tell you not to think because if I do, you’ll only think about not thinking. Someone came to me and asked me: “Please, I need you to keep explaining me how to clear my mind today. I know our coaching time is done but please keep going”. I tried to explain to her I couldn’t, I had other business to do and she kept insisting. So I told her: “Look, your exercise today will be not to think about foxes. You know? The red foxes? Don’t think about them okay?”. She said: “oh… that’s it? That’s so easy”.
At the end of the day I got an email saying that she couldn’t stop thinking about red foxes. They were in her house, in the woods, on the mountains, everywhere! Well… that’s her lesson. If you want to stop thinking about things, just don’t. Don’t obsess on it, otherwise you’ll keep thinking about not thinking. And do you know how the mind woks? Your mind is being controlled by modules, different aspects of your life trying to get your attention. Sometimes it’s all about love, sometimes it’s about money, sometimes it’s about a red fox.
7 - THERE ARE DIFFERENT MODULES TRYING TO GET YOUR ATTENTION
Yes. At all times your mind is working and trying to make you pay attention to specific thoughts. What can you do then? You keep thinking about your ex, or how to solve that problem at work. You care at all times about your parent’s health. There are about 7 different modules. The status module wants you to keep thinking about how you’re gonna present yourself to society. How to keep or elevate your status? Your kin care module makes you think about your parents, your children. I’m not inventing this, it all comes from Douglas Kendrick, if you want to make a broader research. What I want to tell you is that you can influence which modules you should interact with.
8 - YOU CAN INFLUENCE WHICH MODULES WIN OR LOSE
Yes. You can influence which module you want to pay attention to. What is happening right now is that you don’t choose the module, the module chooses you. But with meditation and self control you can start affecting the long-term power of different modules in your life. And it all comes down to one of the most important tips that I always say to everyone:
9 - CHOOSE NOT TO BE GUIDED BY THOUGHTS THAT ARE NOT HELPFUL
Don’t fight your thoughts, allow them to come and let them go. Don’t be guided by thoughts that are not actually helping you, just making you suffer more and more. If you don’t want to think about something, don’t think. But also… Don’t obsess over not thinking because the only thing you’ll do is think about it. You have a choice, you have control. Practice so you can master your mind.
