some arguments are not really about the thing that started them.... they become arguments about being upset, then being upset because the other person is upset, then being upset because apparently it wasn't your turn to be upset hahaha.
that happened to us a lot. something small would go wrong, he would get upset, then i would react to his reaction, and suddenly we were both trapped inside this ridiculous loop. somehow i usually ended up swallowing what i was feeling and trying to make peace.
that is where the olive branch comes from. offering an olive branch means making a gesture of peace after a conflict.... but in the song i keep offering mine again and again until eventually it's basically "just take my tree". it was my funny way of admitting that sometimes i was giving up way too much of myself just to make everything okay again.
the therapists in the lyrics also represent that confusion. am i too fearful? should i be more careful? should i simply be myself? i was constantly trying to understand what i was doing wrong while also wondering whether maybe the responsibility wasn't entirely mine.
