some songs are basically little time capsules.... a bunch of random memories that somehow become a whole relationship when you put them together.
we had so many of those moments.... getting a ride with friends after universal in florida and accidentally going the wrong way on a one way street, watching drag race in hotel rooms, cooking together, drinking, dancing, travelling.... nothing particularly monumental, but those were the moments that made being together feel like home.
the idea for "Toboggan" also came from something random i had read about ice. scientists have spent more than a century trying to understand exactly why ice is so slippery. we know there is this strange liquid-like layer involved, but even something as ordinary as sliding over frozen water is more complicated than it looks. i loved that.
and somehow it felt like us too.... you don't completely understand why you are sliding, you don't really know where you are going, but you are already moving. sometimes you just hold on to each other, have a little faith and enjoy the ride.
that is why the song is full of all those silly memories and word games.... "what happens next, Max?", gruyere because the lyrics are cheesy, and memories hidden inside songs like little souvenirs. i didn't know what would happen next either. i just knew that, for that moment, we were on the toboggan together.
