some endings are quiet. this one really wasn’t.
 
the relationship had ended while i was away, and in that panic of not really accepting what was happening, i went closer instead of giving it space. i travelled all the way there hoping that somehow being physically near him might change something.... but by then the closeness that had existed between us was gone. everything felt unfamiliar, distant and painful.
 
the title carries more than just max though. somehow, three important boys who had broken my heart over the years were all ginger.... phil, max and mike. so in my head they slowly became these "red rocks" scattered through my romantic history. things i had loved, climbed, held onto.... and somehow kept getting torn against. "Torn by Red Rocks" became a way of letting all those red-haired ghosts exist inside the same image.
 
the song knows i crossed a line too. "for you, i would go so far" becomes "for you, i've gone too far", and by the end i am not trying to make myself the hero of the story. even surrounded by all this heartbreak, drama and ridiculous references to maxi challenges and funeral runways, it ends with something much simpler.... "please raise your hand if you've ever made a mistake."
