this is where the story starts.... with attraction, warmth and that feeling that someone suddenly seems to glow in front of you.
 
"Onset of Fire" is about the beginning of falling for phil, when everything about him felt golden. his hair, his freckles, his body, the way he slept, even the light around him became part of the attraction.
 
there are also little details in the lyrics that came from the way i saw him. the line about wanting to "smash a whole province" and lie on his childhood lawns is because he had a tattoo of the province he was from on his chest.... so i turned that image into part of the song.
 
the fire in the title is really that first rush of passion.... when you start noticing every tiny detail about someone and somehow all of it feels important.
 
there is also something very peaceful in the song. wanting to stay until dawn, lying on someone’s chest, counting their freckles while they breathe.... it is intimacy before all the distance, uncertainty and waiting that will come later in the album.
 
this is the moment when the fire is just beginning.
