"Orbit Here, Now" was also inspired by buddhism and mindfulness.... especially the idea that suffering often comes from leaving the present moment and getting trapped in fear about what might happen next.
we were 3,356 kilometres apart, but we talked every day and somehow still felt connected. the problem was that the future started becoming more important than the present. instead of simply living what we had, there was fear about where it was going, whether it could work, and whether somebody would eventually get hurt.
that is why the song keeps coming back to "here, now". mindfulness taught me to pay attention to what is actually happening instead of trying to control what has not happened yet. maybe not every relationship needs an immediate answer. maybe what you have in the present isn’t a problem that needs to be solved.... it can just be something you are living.
i really love the line about our strings being tight and then precautions cutting them. sometimes trying so hard to protect someone from possible pain can end up damaging the connection that already exists.
